Dr. Matthew Giordano, Villa Maria’s Fourth President
Named Villa Maria’s fourth president in March 2019, Dr. Matthew Giordano has been an integral part of the College since 2005.
Dr. Giordano came to Villa as a faculty member in English, a position he held until 2012. In addition to his role as a professor, Giordano served as the chairperson of the liberal arts department for three years, between 2009 and 2012.
In 2012, Dr. Giordano transitioned into College leadership when he became vice president for academic affairs. As VPAA, Dr. Giordano played a pivotal part in planning and implementing the College’s visionary plan, resulting in major enrollment growth and increased retention, launching new academic programs, including an honors program, and helping to secure grant funding in support of student success, including a $1.8 million Title III grant. He has overseen all aspects of academic leadership at the College; highlights include increasing the number of faculty, starting an honors program, pioneering online learning, overseeing assessment, and significantly enhancing student success efforts.
Since Dr. Giordano became president, the College launched three new academic programs: flexible business, game design and computer software development, as well as scholarship eSports. Each of these programs was developed in response to the increased demand for jobs in these industries within the Western New York area and beyond.
Under Dr. Giordano, college leadership created a new strategic plan, which will guide the College and its growth through 2021. He has introduced new models of governance at Villa, nurturing a collegial atmosphere among the faculty and employees. Giordano has also successfully expanded the College’s reach by engaging with several community leaders and elected officials in an effort to develop strategic partnerships and support for the institution.
Dr. Giordano has a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and Philosophy from Binghamton University and both a Master of Arts and Ph.D. in American literature from the Ohio State University. He completed the Executive Leadership Academy of the Council of Independent Colleges and the Felician Leadership Institute in 2018.
Originally from Rochester, Dr. Giordano is married to Jennifer Desiderio, a professor of English at Canisius College and has three daughters: Sophia, Alice, and Lucy. The Giordano family resides in Snyder, NY.
The Board of Trustees looks forward to continuing to work with Dr. Giordano to continue to move the College forward in living out our mission, promoting our values, and achieving our vision of being the premier student-centered institution in Western New York.
