Filmmaking Students Video Chat with Renowned Director Warren P. Sonoda

This week, digital filmmaking students had the opportunity to video chat with Warren P. Sonoda, one of Canada’s busiest, in-demand and prolific directors. In addition, Sonoda is also one of the most accomplished and influential Canadian music video directors with over 160 music videos directed and more than 250 edited. He recently received his second Emmy nomination for ‘Best Direction’ for PBS’s Odd Squad

Sonoda has had a versatile career, having directed in the drama, comedy, family, action and fantasy categories. Some of Sonoda’s most recognizable work includes:

  • Odd Squad
  • Trailer Park Boys
  • This Hour Has 22 Minutes
  • Hatching Matching Dispatching
  • A Christmas Fury
  • 5ive Girls

Sonoda, who just completed work on his 10th feature film and 54th television episode, shared his academic and professional experiences with a group of approximately 20 students, who are interested in directing, producing, editing and more. He encouraged the group to use their time at Villa to try new things and figure out what professional path they want to follow.

“This is the time to figure out what you want to do,” said Sonoda. “Create your inner circle, and remember you may be working together for the rest of your lives. If you don’t think this is important, you’re missing the point of film school.”

Sonoda further encouraged students to collaborate, network, and take ownership of their paths.
