Buffalo, NY – Villa Maria College has announced the line up of entertainers for its M&T Concert Series for the spring 2016 semester. All concerts take place from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. in the Recital Hall on the Villa campus, 240 Pine Ridge Road, Buffalo, NY 14225. The concerts are free and open to the public. Thursday, January 28: Dr. Beverly Smoker
Dr. Smoker, Professor of Music and Chair of the Music Department at Nazareth College, presents a wide range of repertoire including recitals and workshops devoted to 20th-century music. Her recital program “Our Evenings” includes music of Janeček, Rorem, Scriabin, and Schubert. Dr. Smoker’s numerous appearances as soloist and collaborative musician include performances on the Knitting Factory Composer Series, NYC, and recordings for ABC Radio in Brisbane, Australia, and Centaur Records. She was a recipient of a Gramma Fisher Fellowship at the American Institute of Musical Studies in Graz, Austria and, for ten years, a recipient of solo touring grants from the Iowa Arts Council and National Endowment for the Arts.
Thursday, February 11: Shubbaluliuma
Shubbaluliuma presents energetic, electrified renditions of Eastern European folk music and compositions of Béla Bartók, combining humor and technical sophistication in their mesmerizing improvisations.
Thursday, March 10: Christina Courtin
Christina Courtin is a multi-instrumentalist, singer and songwriter living in Brooklyn, New York. She has released two solo recordings of original genre-bending music, one self-titled on Nonesuch (2009) and the other entitled ‘Varsity’ on Hundred Pockets Records (2013). As a member of the neo-classical NYC ensemble The Knights, Christina is featured on six of their albums on Sony Classical records and shared a 2011 Juno award. A Juilliard graduate in Violin Performance, Christina has written and performed music for national television and radio audiences, has strong regional followings in sophisticated hotbeds of music worldwide and has a dedicated NYC following for her work in voice, violin, viola, and guitar. She has teamed up with Fun, Dirty Projectors, Nick Cave, Paul McCartney, Marianne Faithful, Yo-Yo Ma, Sufjan Stevens, Marc Ribot, Iron and Wine, and Sara Bareilles.
Thursday, April 14: Ravi Padmanabha’s My Nada Brahma
Ravi Padmanabha is a percussionist, multi-instrumentalist, improviser/composer. His initial interest was in the drums led to a variety of world instruments. From an early age, Ravi was exposed to Indian Classical music. At age 18, he began his formal Tabla studies with Pandit Ananda Gopal, and later with Pandit Samar Saha of Calcutta. He then continued with Tabla Maestro Pandit Sharda Sahai. He has performed with such notables as Robert Dick, Willam Parker, Peter Kowald, Pauline Oliveros, Daniel Carter, Adam Lane, Blaise Siwula, Steve Swell and Bern Nix.
