Globally recognized advocate for human dignity and one of the nation’s leading voices against the death penalty Sister Helen Prejean visits Villa on March 18, 2026.
A member of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Medaille, she is best known for her bestselling book Dead Man Walking: An Eyewitness Account of the Death Penalty in the United States, which was adapted into an Academy Award–winning film and an acclaimed opera. For more than four decades, Sister Helen has ministered to people on death row, supported victims’ families, and worked tirelessly to educate the public on issues of justice, mercy, and reconciliation. Her life and work continue to inspire meaningful dialogue and action around compassion, faith, and social justice.
Schedule of Events
Sr. Helen Prejean will visit Villa Maria College to tour campus, meet with students and other members of the Villa community, and discuss her groundbreaking book, Dead Man Walking: An Eyewitness Account of the Death Penalty in the United States, which was later adapted into an Academy Award–winning film, an acclaimed opera, and, most recently, a graphic novel. She will lead a conversation about her experiences with capital punishment and the impact it has on inmates, their families, and more.

- Wednesday, March 18: Sister Helen speaks regarding her experience with Death Row inmates, in the Auditorium at 11:15 AM
- Wednesday, March 18: Community Forum regarding the death penalty and social justice, in the Recital Hall at 2 PM

High school students are invited to visit Villa Maria College for a special presentation by renowned activist and author Sister Helen Prejean. Known for her powerful storytelling and commitment to social justice, Sister Prejean will share her experiences, insights, and message of compassion, encouraging students to think critically about issues like empathy, justice, and human dignity. This visit offers a meaningful opportunity for students to hear from an inspiring speaker while experiencing Villa Maria’s welcoming campus firsthand.
