By January 5, 2026January 19th, 2026Photography

Photography is both a form of artistic expression and a field that demands technical skill, visual awareness, and thoughtful decision-making. For students majoring in photography, learning goes far beyond taking pictures; it involves understanding how powerful images are created, why certain compositions feel intentional, and how photographs communicate meaning.

Villa Maria College offers a hands-on, studio-based photography program designed to immerse students in the creative process. Through guided coursework and studio practice, students build technical proficiency while exploring photography through historical and contemporary lenses. Along the way, they develop a personal artistic style and a deeper understanding of visual storytelling, laying the groundwork to learn to be a photographer in an academic and creative environment.

What You Study in a Photography Program

Villa’s bachelor’s degree in photography is designed to guide students from foundational concepts to advanced photographic practice. Coursework is structured so students gain a real photographer’s eye, build technical confidence, and learn to take and give creative direction through classes, hands-on projects, critiques, and internship opportunities.

Foundational Courses

Core classes introduce photography majors to the fundamentals that shape the craft. Early on, students learn how images are constructed and see how each component influences the way a photograph is seen and understood.

  • Intro to Photography: Immerse yourself in basic camera operation and photographic processes.
  • Color Theory: Explore how color relationships affect mood, emphasis, and meaning in art and photography.
  • Color Photography: Focus on using color in photographic works while emphasizing consistency, control, and visual impact.
  • Photo Imaging and Design: Gain digital skills like editing, retouching, and preparing images for print and presentation.
  • Two-Dimensional Design: Examine composition, balance, rhythm, and spatial organization and learn how to arrange visual elements with intention.
  • Drawing: Develop close observation and strengthen your ability to see detail, proportion, and form.
  • Information and Media Literacy: Learn how images circulate in media and analyze media landscapes, audiences, and visual messaging.

Intermediate Courses

As you progress through the program, classes shift toward refining technique and improving upon creative decision-making. These courses challenge you to work more deliberately, building control and confidence as technical proficiency and personal expression grow.

  • Intermediate Photography: Develop greater control over camera settings, composition, and workflow while completing projects that require planning, revision, and critique.
  • Studio Lighting: Learn how to shape and control light using professional studio equipment for a range of photographic subjects.
  • History of Photography: Study the evolution of photography through influential photographers, movements, and cultural shifts that shaped the medium.

  • Principles of Marketing and Principles of Advertising: Gain foundational knowledge in marketing and advertising strategies that photographers can apply to their own work.

Advanced Courses

Advanced coursework allows students to slow down, work with greater intention, and explore photography at a higher level. These classes encourage experimentation, critical thinking, and a deeper commitment to personal direction.

  • Advanced Studio Photography: Tackle complex studio projects that emphasize planning, experimentation, and refined technical execution.
  • Advanced Digital Imaging: Develop advanced digital workflows and produce polished, professional-quality photographic work.
  • Documentary Photography and Photojournalism: Use photography as a storytelling tool, focusing on real-world subjects, narrative structure, and ethical considerations.

  • Contemporary Art: Place photographic work within today’s broader artistic and cultural conversations.

Expand Your Photography Education Through Electives

Photography majors at Villa can further strengthen their work through electives and related programs across campus.

Courses in digital filmmaking allow students to apply photographic composition and lighting skills while learning video camera operation and motion-based storytelling. Digital media and communication classes help students understand how images are used across platforms and how visual content connects with audiences beyond still photography. Students may also explore business administration coursework, which can be especially valuable since many photographers freelance or run their own businesses. Learning about marketing, pricing, and client relationships helps support long-term creative success.
