Joy Kuebler, RLA, ASLA, founding principal of Joy Kuebler Landscape Architect, PC, received the 2016 Ellen Shipman Distinguished Private Practitioner Award from the American Society of Landscape Architects/New York Upstate Chapter at its Annual Awards Celebration on February 3 in downtown Syracuse, NY. The award recognizes an outstanding individual practitioner for achievements in three areas: design, leadership and ASLA Chapter involvement.

Throughout her 20-year career in Landscape Architecture, Ms. Kuebler has brought diverse and meaningful projects to life – from half-acre community-built parks to learning gardens at public schools, large university campus redevelopment, to streetscapes
and green infrastructure projects. She launched her firm in 2003 to have a positive impact on the public’s quality of life through sensitive and responsible design for outdoor spaces. Her projects focus on the human experience in the landscape, integrating architecture and the outdoors to create unique, inspiring environments.

With more than 15 years of active ASLA Executive Committee membership, Ms. Kuebler has held the positions of Secretary and Member‐at‐large, where she initiated the Chapter’s first social media presence. In 2014 she became Chapter President and led the NY Upstate ASLA to its highest membership levels in 60 years.

Joy is a member of National ASLA’s Government Affairs Advisory Committee, where the Society’s position on national initiatives and legislative policy such as Green Infrastructure, Land and Water Conservation and Alternative Transportation are discussed and developed. She has participated in National Advocacy Day in Washington DC for more than seven years and is proud to have worked with NYS Congressman Brian Higgins, representing the 26th District, and his decision to be a sponsor of the “New Opportunities for Bicycle and Pedestrian Infrastructure Financing Act,” a bill that proposed setting aside financing opportunities for small communities to leverage funds for alternative transportation design and construction.

A resident of North Tonawanda, NY, Joy received her Associate of Arts degree in Interior Design from Villa Maria College and her Bachelor’s degree in Landscape Architecture from Cornell University. She is a member of the American Society of Landscape Architects and immediate past president of the NYS Upstate Chapter, the University at Buffalo Center for Entrepreneurial Leadership CORE Alumni Association and the Canisius Women’s Business Center.

Joy is also the recipient of several professional honors, including the Business First 2016 Fast Track Award; Business First 40 under Forty Award; Canisius College Women’s Business Center Entrepreneur of the Year; the American Society of Landscape Architects New York Upstate Chapter Communications Merit Award for “The first residential green roof in WNY”; the American Society of Landscape Architects New York Upstate Chapter Merit Award for Buffalo Public School 90; Building Construction Review Top 50 Built Projects in Upstate New York for Eastwood Place Dormitory at Canisius College and the Villa Maria College Distinguished Alumni Award.

“It is with such pride and pleasure that I share this news and congratulate Joy on this wonderful recognition,” said Sandra Reicis, Professor of Interior Design at Villa Maria College. “Her remarkable talent is only surpassed by her energy and personality.  She is one of Villa’s shining stars, and a gem to Buffalo, making our city more beautiful with each project she undertakes.”
