As colleges in Western New York, New York State and throughout the United States struggle with declining enrollment, Villa Maria College announces its student enrollment for the Fall 2015 semester is 21 percent higher than last year, making this year’s incoming class the private, co-educational Catholic college’s largest in 18 years and its largest total enrollment since 1986 (representing a 15 percent increase).
Villa Maria College President Sister Marcella Marie Garus attributes Villa’s higher numbers in part to the successful execution of the Visionary Plan the college announced in 2014, which included adding new academic programs; making substantial investments in student success through Villa’s Student Success Center; adding intercollegiate athletics and building a new fitness center on campus; continuing its highly-effective Honors program; offering online courses and implementing the Achieve Program for Students with Learning Differences. In addition, Villa Maria was approved as a Start-Up NY site and is one of the largest private college partners with Say Yes Buffalo.
“This is an exciting time for Villa Maria College,” says Sister Garus. “God has blessed us with an exceptional staff who made this increase in enrollment possible. Implementation of our Visionary Plan combined with the exceptional dedication of our Villa Maria College community has not only allowed us to exceed projections, but also to reach a high point in the history of enrollment at Villa Maria College.”
“The Visionary Plan truly united the campus around common goals,” says Dr. Matthew Giordano, Vice President for Academic Affairs. “Villa Maria has taken a number of bold steps as part of its innovative and comprehensive plan to promote student success and student centeredness. With continued program development and further implementation of its student success plan, Villa Maria is well-poised for further growth and for strengthening its service to the Western New York community.”
“From an admissions perspective, we have honed our efforts at communication and marketing, expanding our reach into our main territories and doing a more effective job reaching students,” says Brian J. Emerson, Vice President for Enrollment Management and Student Services. “With our expanded program offerings, people looking for small, student-centered, affordable private options are considering Villa Maria College more than ever before.”
