Gary Damon’s passion for service to others, leadership on behalf of citizens and communities and steadfast commitment to positive change, has raised his profile as one of Western New York’s most progressive, emerging leaders. Gary began his professional career as an Educator in the Buffalo Public School system and relocated to Chester, Pennsylvania where he served as a RealWorld™ Learning Specialist and Learning Coach for an alternative school. As an acting supervisor and senior class advisor, he assisted in graduating 94% of the school’s senior population and successfully implemented a multi-faceted, project-based curriculum plan which implemented several academic content areas across six grade levels.

Upon his return to his hometown of Buffalo, NY, Gary was recruited as a Youth Services Program Coordinator with the Community Action Organization of Erie County, Inc. In this capacity, he administered a 21st Century Community Learning Center federally-funded program where he supervised 15 staff, approximately 160 students and managed an annual budget of $307,000 while monitoring students’ academic progress and enforcing healthy, social skills.

In December of 2013, Gary’s hard work and commitment to youth rapidly propelled his career to unforeseeable heights. He was appointed as Deputy Commissioner of Erie County’s Youth Services Division at just 28 years of age, making history as the youngest to ever serve in that capacity. In his new role, Gary oversees management of the Secure Juvenile Detention Centers, Non-Secured Juvenile Cottages, Runaway & PINS population, Juvenile Detention Alternative Initiative (JDAI) and the Erie County Youth Bureau which provides over $1.7 million in funding to non-profit organizations, 11 Municipal Youth Bureaus and 32 towns and villages throughout the County.

Gary also serves on several committees including, but not limited to, the Juvenile Detention Association, Juvenile Justice Stakeholders and the Detention Risk Assessment Instrument (DRAI) Implementation Planning and Execution Committee, to name a few. He has also developed a résumé for public speaking through his community service and desire to encourage others. His speaking is commonly centered on the power of education; using his inspiring story of growing up from humble beginnings to becoming a highly-respected professional, lecturer and training consultant, empowering audiences of all ages.

Gary earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Secondary Education and English from Niagara University and received his Masters of Arts in Organizational Leadership from Medaille College. Currently, he is a Doctoral Candidate in Executive Leadership at St. John Fisher College and is working vigorously towards earning his Ed.D. by the Summer of 2016.
