Villa Maria College’s 50th anniversary celebrationsbegan with a special liturgy in its student auditorium at 2 p.m. on Sunday, September 26, 2010.
Monsignor Angelo Caliguri concelebrated the mass with the Reverend Robert Hora. In his homily, Father Hora talked of the history of Villa Maria College and the legacy that the Felician Franciscan sisters have and continue to carry out through their mission of educating and serving students, the community and one another. Placed on the altar were visual reminders of the last 50 years and of the present day, including a picture of Mother Guzowski, foundress and first president of Villa Maria College; a rendering of the 50th anniverary logo designed by a Villa student; a college diploma and other articles intended to promote an awareness of where the College has been while looking forward to its future.
On Sunday, October 3, 2010, members of Villa Maria College joined with the community to re-dedicate the Villa Maria College Complex peace site and pray for a more peaceful world within the local community and worldwide. A candelight prayer service was held at 6:00 p.m. in the Villa Maria Convent Chapel on Doat Street prior to a candlelight procession in which participants walked prayerfully down Doat Street and Pine Ridge Road to the Villa Maria College campus, stopping at various “stations” along the way to reflect and pray for peace. Receptions were held after both events to celebrate with students, faculty, staff, members of the Board of Trustees and the WNY community.
On Sunday, October 24, 2010 at 3 p.m. the Cheektowaga Symphony Orchestra led by Conductor & Music Director, John Landis along with the Chopin Singing Society, dedicated a special performance of the opera “Flis” before audiences in the auditorium of Villa Maria College.
