The mission of Villa Maria College Library is to provide resources and services that support the teaching mission of the college and to assist students in becoming information literate.

BORROWING POLICIES
  • Borrowers include all current students, trustees, administrators, faculty and staff members and Villa Maria College alumni.
  • Students must have a current, validated student I.D. card with a library barcode in order to check out materials from the library. If your student I.D. card does not have a library barcode, please see the Multimedia Services Librarian.
  • VMC Alumni must present a current active membership card to avail themselves of library services.

Borrowing privileges are not transferable. Borrowers are responsible for the materials charged out in their names.

Print Materials

With the exception of Reference items, all books on open shelving are available for loans. Books and Children's Literature circulate for 3 weeks and are renewable. Students are allowed to check out ten (10) books at a time. Periodicals do not circulate, but may be photocopied.

All print materials should be returned to the book drop in the circulation desk.

Non-Print Materials

The following audiovisual materials may be checked-out for 1 week and are renewable: videos, audiocassettes, CD's, and DVD's. Students are allowed to check out 1 video or 1 DVD at a time. Three (3) CD's are allowed per student for check out. Other audiovisual materials circulate in-house: realia, slides, video discs, early childhood materials, reference materials and manuals. Materials may circulate to the classroom for class presentations. Students pick up the materials on the day of the class and after the class return them immediately to the Library Circulation Desk.

Reserve Materials

Instructors often bring required or supplemental reading materials to the library for reserve. This is to ensure the availability of course materals to their students. Reserves may consist of books, journal articles or media items. Use of reserved materials is subject to restrictions which are determined by the instructor.

Renewals

Library materials may be renewed over the telephone, by email or in person. To renew materials over the telephone or email, please contact a Librarian. (Listed under the heading "Staff" on the library homepage)

Overdues

Overdue fees for print and non-print materials including videos, CD's and DVD's are 10 cents a day.

Late closed reserve materials are 50 cents per hour until library item is returned.

Other late reserved materials are 50 cents per day.

If a student officially withdraws from college or drops out unofficially and has library materials checked out to them, they must be returned as soon as possible to the library.

All outstanding fines, losses, damages and unreturned items will be reported to the Record's Office. Grades, Transcripts or Degrees will not be released until library obligations are satisfied.


GENERAL LIBRARY POLICIES

Children Policy

It is the policy of Villa Maria College Library that children must be accompanied by, and under the supervision of, a parent or guardian at all times.

Cell Phone Policy - Keep in mind that the library is a place for studying, reading and doing educational research. Cell phone usage and other elecronic equipment will only be allowed in the North Room of the Library.

Remember, when using cell phones, be considerate of others. Always keep your voice low and conversations private.

The South Room in the library is the designated "Quiet Study Area" for those needing more privacy. No cell phones or any electronic equipment will be allowed in the South Room or at the Information Commons (computer workstation area), thus allowing privacy for those studying and working on assignments.

In addition, there will be no food, drink or any electronic devices in The Information Commons area. (computer workstation)


RESOURCES

The print holdings of the library contain thousands of items which include general circulation, reference materials, Children's Literature collection, and Polish collections. The Library subscribes to more than one hundred currrent periodicals. In addition, provides access to several online databases.

The Audiovisual/Media Center collection consists of thousands of media software such as DVDs, compact disks, videos, audiocassettes, slides, early childhood materials and a realia collection.

The Library collection is supplemented by cooperative resource sharing with other Western New York libraries and interlibrary loan services.

Copy Machines and Printers

A copy machine is located in the library for student use. There is a fee of 15 cents per copy.

Color and Laser Printers are located in the library at the computer workstations.

Preservation of Library Materials

Please be very careful with all library materials. Be sure to keep them away from food and beverages. Protect them from the elements outdoors and do not tear, bend or mark up book pages with ink, pencils, highlighters, etc. Please do not insert objects in books or damage library materials in any way.

Preservation of library resources should be a priority for all users to secure usage for the next generation.
