Our students develop beyond the sensitivities of aesthetic and social responsibilities to embrace broader environmental concerns and a synthesized, humanistic world view. The faculty is committed to cultivating a culture of practice, a readiness for the profession, a sophisticated design acumen coupled with advanced computer skills, a technical vocabulary and an affection for the field.
Mission Statement
The Interior Design Program Mission encompasses the following five broad-based goals:
- To provide concepts and skills necessary for students preparing for professional careers in interior design
- To maintain acceptable academic and professional standards of performance.
- To prepare graduates for advanced or graduate study and/or entry into the design field
- To develop off campus experiences through community projects, field trips, seminars, internships and travel abroad opportunities toward preparing design students to meet the demands of contemporary business and industry.
- To prepare students to think critically, write clearly, and speak persuasively.
To achieve the goals outlined above, the Interior Design Program at Villa Maria College integrates specific interior design courses with art foundation and liberal art courses, providing students with a well-balanced, integrated program of study.
The Interior Design profession encompasses many components: gathering client/user needs, space analysis, evaluation and planning, construction methods, materials and codes, drawing, drafting and rendering of plans, selecting colors, fabrics, furniture and writing specifications.
Villa's Interior Design Program stresses space planning and rendering skills to express visual ideas. Computer aided design (CAD) equipment is used by students at all levels. Additional coursework focuses on the history of interior design, furniture styles, and the business aspects of the profession.
