Program Description
The professional interior designer is qualified by education, experience, and examination to enhance the function and quality of interior spaces. The Interior Design program stresses space planning and design, as well as the development of advanced graphic and verbal communication skills needed to express visual ideas. Students use drawing, drafting, rendering, and modeling skills and computer-aided design (CAD) equipment at all levels to explore and communicate increasingly complex design issues. In Interior Design studio courses, students are prepared to create safe, functional, and attractive environments for homes, workplaces, and users in the education, healthcare, hospitality, and recreation markets. Required internships complement classroom learning and help to bridge the gap between education and practice. Students graduate prepared to meet the demands of the design profession and also the academic rigors of continued higher education.

Program Facilities
The Interior Design Resource Room is for the exclusive use of Interior Design students. This room functions as a working library of surface materials and design resources. In addition, it houses the print plotter, blue print machine and various tools to assist students in preparing studio and other design projects.

The Interior Design Computer Labs are designed to include both computer stations with CAD and other Interior Design software programs, drafting tables, and printer and scanner.

The Art Shop is a specialized facility housing a wood-working shop used for various studio and design projects. The Art Shop is equipped with quality power and hand tools such as band saws, table saws, planers, and drill presses.

Program Requirements

To maintain educational standards required by external accreditation and regulatory agencies and interior design and related professional organizations, students must meet the following specific program requirements:

  • Attend an Interior Design Information Session within the first year of enrollment.
  • Complete a professional development component for each semester enrolled in the Interior Design Program. The requirements are eight hours per semester for full-time students and four hours per semester for part-time students.
  • At the conclusion of each semester, select, correct and process required portfolio pieces that reflect quality work and effective presentation skills.
  • Complete program outcomes assessment requirements.

Career Potential & Employment Outlook
Increased attention in the media in recent years has helped to educate the public about the unique and diverse knowledge, skills, and perspective interior designers bring to this expanding field. With the fast pace of change in business and industry, demand for interior designers in planning and remodeling office space will continue to increase. Residential customers are expected to seek design services to help them choose from the multitude of new materials and products. Increasingly, manufacturers and retailers of interior products are offering design services to serve customers.

Graduates of the associate degree program qualify for entry-level positions such as assistant designers in the commercial or residential fields, as drafters and renderers, or as home furnishings salespersons. Advancement comes with experience.

Graduates of the bachelor degree program are prepared for positions as interior designers in most markets. Graduates can be admitted to the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) by completing a required period of professional practice and passing the National Council for Interior Design Qualification (NCIDQ) exam.
