What is Financial Aid?
Financial Aid is monetary assistance in the form of student loans, parent loans, grants, scholarships and work-study employment that a student may apply for to help with the cost of attending college.

How do I apply for Financial Aid?
All college students apply for Financial Aid by completing the FAFSA Form (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). Go to FAFSA on the web: www.fafsa.ed.gov and the complete the application on line. The student and the student’s family’s financial information is required to complete the FAFSA Form.

Who will assist me with the Financial Aid process?
The Villa Maria College Financial Aid Office will assist you. Call 961-1849 to arrange an individual appointment. Evening hours are available by request for students and parents who work during the day.

What is Service Learning?
Service Learning is a method of instruction that combines community service with specific academic goals and reflection. It is an experience that benefits both the student and the community organization. For more information (link to http://villa.edu/student/servicelearning.html.

Is Service Learning required at Villa Maria College?
Yes. Each student at Villa is required to complete a specific number of hours of Service Learning before graduation. (25 hours for students graduating with an Associate degree; 50 hours for those graduating with a Bachelor degree). Some classes at Villa incorporate Service Learning into class assignments, and most on-campus clubs sponsor Service Learning opportunities. Be sure to listen for more information about Service Learning at Orientation, Advisor-Advisee meetings, and Club meetings.

How many hours a week will I spend in class?
The number of hours you will spend in class each week is dependent on several factors, including your full-time or part-time status, your program, and the nature of your courses. A full-time student, though, can expect to spend about fifteen hours each week in class.

How many hours outside of class will I need for coursework?
This is also dependent on a number of factors, but it is important to note that time spent on coursework outside of class is at least as important as time spent in class. A good rule of thumb is to allow two to three hours outside of class for every hour you spend in class. So, a full-time student can expect thirty to forty-five hours of outside work each week.

How many hours a week is it recommended that I work at my job?
The College recommends that students work no more than ten to fifteen hours each week. This is due to the fact that a full-time student will have time commitments between forty-five and sixty hours a week (including both in-class and out-of-class expectations).

Will I have any other time commitments?
You will be expected to attend orientation (provide link to student life page) before you begin classes, and then meet with your advisor each semester. You must also complete at least twenty-five hours of Service Learning before you graduate. And, you should note that almost all programs of study at the College have an internship requirement, and many classes require students to attend plays, concerts, gallery openings, or lectures.

What is an Academic Advisor?
An academic advisor is a full-time faculty member who acts as a consultant and mentor to students, assisting in academic planning and scheduling, answering questions, and referring the student to other College services as appropriate. Your advisor will be assigned to you based on your program. Be sure and meet and your advisor!

What is the first-year experience?
IDS 106, First-Year Experience, is a required one-credit course for all new, first-time freshmen. This course will help you develop strategies to become a successful college student.

What immunizations am I required to have?
You will need to demonstrate proof of immunity to measles (two doses), mumps, and rubella, or two MMR’S. You will also need to sign a form indicating you have had a meningitis vaccine or declination. These immunization requirements must be completed 30 days from the first day of classes.
