Villa Maria College of Buffalo in partnership with Lamar Advertising is hosting a graphic design contest to further communicate the importance of Art and Design in our community. The theme this year’s contest is “Art Matters” and is open to area High School students. The goal is to create a billboard design that visually and dynamically communicates this theme. Students who enter the contest will be able to work directly with Villa Maria design faculty and student-aids in a series of studio sessions. While utilizing many of the same methods taught in Villa’s sophomore level design courses, faculty will assist students refine and articulate their concepts. Any High School student may enter the contest. Only two design concepts allowed per entry (student). All entries will be reviewed and voted on by a panel of judges. Four winning designs will be chosen and created into billboards, displayed in and around the Buffalo area during the Spring of 2008. Dates and locations will be supplied to winners. Guidelines Designs should be visually dynamic and communicate the concept “Art Matters.” Students may use photographic imagery, original artwork, type and graphics. The headline “Art Matters” must appear in your design. There are no limitations to use of color. Keep in mind though, that these will eventually be billboard size, so be sure imagery meet specifications outlined in the next column. SUBMISSION DEADLINES Studio Session One: February, 15, 2008 | 10 AM -12 NOON In this session, students will be expected to present their preliminary concepts, along with pencil and/or marker sketches to Villa Maria Design Faculty. Studio Session Two: February, 29, 2008 | 10 AM -12 NOON In this session, students will be expected to present their final concepts Villa Maria Design Faculty. *All Studio Sessions will be held at Villa Maria College’s Graphic Design lab. Final Submission Date: March 14, 2008 Specifications Photoshop files are preferred saved in CMYK as a flattened TIF. Quark, Indesign, Illustrator or PDF files are also acceptable formats.
