Program Description
The Graphic Design program is a two-plus-two model. The associate degree curriculum is imbedded into the Bachelor of Fine Arts curriculum, allowing students to enter directly into the B.F.A. program or to move seamlessly into the program following successful completion of the associate degree. The program of study includes a strong foundational focus on design basics, color theory, drawing and painting. Industry-specific knowledge and conceptual problem solving is explored through studies in graphic design fundamentals, typography, digital imaging, and visual communications with attention to technical and aesthetic aspects. Multimedia and interactive design is emphasized earlier in the program and advertising, publication and advanced web design round out the full program. The unique course offerings
provide students with the skills and knowledge for career opportunities.
Program Facilities
Graphic Design has both a dedicated and a shared studio which include drawing tables and state-of-the-art iMacApple computers, as well as a project critique area. Students have access to a classroom reference library and additional equipment such as flat-bed scanners, Intous Graphics Pen Tablet, roofing printer and large-format printer. Computer software includes Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, FlashGoLive, and Acrobat Professional.
Program Requirements
Students must earn a grade of C or above in all Graphic Design (GRA) courses for successful completion.
Career Potential & Employment Outlook
Graphic Design, a $7 billion dollar-a-year industry, has an ever-increasing demand for highly trained design professionals. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of graphic designers is expected to grow 13% from 2008 through 2018 as the demand for graphic design continues to increase
from both advertisers and computer design firms. Moreover, graphic designers with website design and animation experience will be in especially high demand for design projects for interactive media. Entry-level positions for associate degree graduates are available as mechanical artists, graphic designers, package designers and illustrators.
